Beautiful warmth…

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

The snow storm has finally left Europe but it’s still really cold. I close my eyes and see red brick walls covered in swatches of raw silks glowing in exotic hues, the softest Spanish merino wools and a comforting smell of leather lingers in the air.

These are my memories from Gwendolyn’s studio where I worked as a assistant years ago. She makes beautiful winter hats by hand. She only uses the most luxurious of materials. The level of care that goes making these hats is something you don’t often see. I swear each hat has a soul.

And Gwendolyn herself seems to come from some calm, ancient place. I always walked out of her studio with colors and textures swirling around my head.

Fruits…

Friday, December 11th, 2009

People call them Fruits. I don’t know how that name came about, but Fruits are creators and wearers of fabulously over-the-top fashion coming out of Tokyo’s trendy Harajuku neighborhood.

There are many substyles under the Fruit trend, the Decora style is pictured below in it’s overly accessorized glory. Sickly sweet pinks layered without restraint and cute characters all over the place. Love it!

Make your own cards.

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

This is a really cute and easy card idea courtesy How About Orange, probably one of the most brilliant design blogs out there. If you want to make this easy note card, download the PDF template from Jessica’s blog here and print it out. (Each sheet makes two cards.) Cut the sheet in half and fold the two cards. Attach some colorful buttons with hot glue and presto!

Tag your Christmas gifts with something made by you, now that’s impressive. Trust me, they’ll ask where you got the card and then you can say, “I made it!” *smug look on face*

Here’s another example from the lovely lady at Storybook Woods who also gave it try, but this time with fabric buttons. Pretty.

Bunny alert!

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Our friend Kirsten at Rosenthal made a sock bunny while lounging on her summer holiday. He’s the tall grey one in the centre, his name is Curt and I find him rather stoic looking. We were inspired to put together a Bunny Board showing some chic yet cute monocromatic bunnies, appealing to adults as well as kids.

Clockwise from the top is Curt by Kirsten, Petit Lapin by vinyl artist Mr.Clement, a plush bunny found at Plush You, fashion inspired Fifi Lapin and the timeless Miffy. Click on the Fifi Lapin link for a compelling narrative about a bunny fashionista.

How to make Marzipan Toadstools

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

This recipe is from a kids cookbook but the results are cool enough for any adult. It’s easy to do and the result is so adorable you wont want to eat it.

You will need: a block of marzipan and red food coloring. That’s it!

Cut the block of marzipan in half.

Add 3 drops of red food coloring to the block of marzipan…

…and mash up with fingers until all the marzipan is red…

..like this.

Make the toadstool tops by shaping with your fingers. When you are done, wash your hands. This is very important because you are about to handle the non-colored marzipan.

Break off a bit of the white marzipan and roll out little dots with your fingers, and press these on to the red tops you just made. Careful to not get your hands red.

Now make the stalks, basically a cylinder with a flat bottom.

Press the tops on to the stalks and you have your toadstools!

We made a bunny friend for the toadstools.

Admire…

and eat!

Cute but Ugly

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

We stumbled upon a blog called Ugly Overload and just had to share it with you. This delightful guy collects images of odd-looking creatures, strangely cute yet ugly. We just know Pepe and Friends lovers are going to like this, even if they are slightly repulsed.

This tiny red kangaroo was accidentally ejected from her Mom’s pouch. Don’t worry, caregivers at the Zoo sorted out the problem.

I think this is a baby Platypus. Look at his stocky arms!

Here he is again. Older, wiser, hairier.

Some sort of a baby monkey that looks like an old man. A cute old man that is.

Jetho Macey makes cool stuff.

Monday, March 24th, 2008

Jethro is this really cool designer guy that won an Elle Decoration award last year for his unusual concrete tiles with a etched lacy looking flower pattern, see below or click here to see his site. Did ya know that Jethro was named one of the five hottest design talents in Britain by eBay? eBay chose him to be at the forefront of their new international site eBay Express.
